Co-ordinator Kavisha Mazzella said the United Nations of Song choir, which had its first session this year, was looking for singers - especially men - who shared its core values of social inclusion and celebrating diversity.
Mazzella said the appeal of music transcended race, culture, faith and language, and the 11 people who showed up to the first session had a fantastic time.
“People love to sing music, even if you sing in a different language, the feeling comes through straight away,” she said.
“I think music is the most powerful art form; regardless of your culture, faith or language.”
Mazzella said her inspiration to develop multicultural programs came from her migrant heritage.
“Dad’s Italian and mum is Anglo-Burmese and they met in England where I was born before we migrated here in the early ‘60s,” Mazzella said.
“We know what it’s like to feel isolated when you first arrive and how much it means when people are friendly to you.”
The Manningham Multicultural and Interfaith Choir meets on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, at the Manningham Arts Centre, 177 Foote St, Templestowe. Details: 9840 9382
