Live arts incubator SeedPod # 4

Punctum’s live arts incubator SeedPod #4 The Drought Within treats central Victorian audiences to a rare and exciting collaboration and performance that brings together some of Victoria’s most acclaimed artists.

Premiering in Bendigo at the Old Fire Station and led by Lella Cariddi, performers Tony Yap and Janette Hoe are teaming up with musician Kavisha Mazzella and visual artists Anthony Pelchen and Ruth Lyon for a mesmerising performance where physical theatre, sound and voice meet to reveal inner landscapes.

THE DROUGHT WITHIN is a multi arts performance that will be documented on film and then form an integral part of a touring exhibition - ‘DROUGHT- Creative Cross Cultural Collaborations’.
Curated by Lella Cariddi, this exhibition will be first presented at Federation Square in Melbourne on August 22, 2008, as part of the Melbourne Writers festival, after which it will to
travel to Mildura for Palimpsest 2009.

In remembering her strong family connections and past in Bendigo, Lella said:
“My family arrived in Bendigo from Italy as post war migrants, and lived there from 1955- 2000. I spent my integrative Australian years in two houses in Bendigo; the first, in rooms behind a fruit shop in Mitchell St, and the second, in a cottage in Carpenter St. opposite the cemetery.”
Whilst discussing the connections between her growing up in Bendigo and her current exhibition Lella said:
“Regardless of how well one is integrated into mainstream Australian society, most involuntary migrants relate to a state of displacement.
For me to be able to make a creative gift to Bendigo would be like a homecoming.”

Many from Bendigo know Sculptor Ruth Lyon, whose work forms part of The Drought Within performance. Her commissioned public art works can be seen in various sites around Bendigo. Ruth is collaborating with Butoh dancer Janette Hoe for the performance.

Also performing isTony Yap who heads the Tony Yap Company and is a current recipient of the Australia Council’s prestigious two-year Dance Fellowship. Janette Hoe has an expanding solo and collaborative background in Butoh and hybrid forms, working locally and overseas. Kavisha Mazzella is an ARIA winning singer/songwriter with a well documented history of solo and collaborative work, most notably with the Italian Women’s’ Choir. The work of Anthony Pelchen has been across mediums and scale, from a two square kilometre installation to the most intimate of gouache paintings..

Over the past months the artists have teased out very personal and shared responses to drought in its broadest sense – a potent mix of the emotional, bodily and environmental.
Implicit to their exploration is an aching absence - akin to what one experiences in displacement. The artist collaborators each have considerable personal and professional histories through their major bodies of work that capture human majesty and grace in the face of difficulty. In being brought together through the SeedPod sponsorship, they hope to build an enduring work that strikes a deep, resonating chord in regional Victoria.
