About Sing for Water

Six years ago composer and singer Helen Chadwick, inspired by the power of song, initiated the first Sing for Water event at the Thames Festival in London.

Since then, Sing for Water has gone from strength to strength as community choirs and performance groups around the UK have been inspired to organise their own events.

You, your choir or your singing group can join a Sing for Water event. You could also set up a brand new one in your local community. Get sponsored and help some of the world's poorest people gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

Sing for Water at the Scoop in London

Sing for Water - London 2008

WaterAid's largest Sing for Water took place in London on Sunday 14 September 2008 during the Thames Festival.

Singers at Sing for Water in London, September 2008Over 800 members of community choirs from across the UK came together to create a breathtaking performance. The mass choir was also joined by Mouthful, a four piece a cappella vocal ensemble. A number of choirs sang their own repertoire for the Marasong which took place along the riverside. Sing for Water 2008 ended with a rousing performance of Free Yourself, with Una May Olomolaiye, which had the audience on its feet.

The first Sing for Water event happened at the Thames Festival in 2002. To date Sing for Water has raised over £260,000 for WaterAid projects in Malawi and Ghana, and over $50,000 Australian dollars for WaterAid Australia's work in East Timor.

This year's crowds showed their appreciation of the performance by giving generously to our team of volunteer bucket collectors after the concert. WaterAid also received sponsorship donations from many of the choir groups taking part. We hope to raise £50,000 through Sing for Water London to fund WaterAid projects in Ghana and Malawi.

A huge thank you to the choirs and individuals listed below who took part. Thank you to all our volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you! And a special thank you to Choir Directors Michael Harper and Roxanne Smith and of course, Helen Chadwick.

Seeing clean water change lives

In October 2005, Helen Chadwick and Pauline Down visited the Ghanaian WaterAid project Sing for Water supports.
We visited the village of Najore, where most people had suffered from Guinea Worm and there was no safe water to drink.
Since our visit a new bore hole has been built, see below. Many more villages need our help..

Here is a message from Rockson who working in the villages we are supporting in Ghana:
Belated Happy New Year,
Dear Colleagues in the business of working towards improving the very lives of the very poor around the world through support to provision of safe water. It's out of great joy to inform you that Najore, a the guinea worm endemic community which you visited in Volta Region in Ghana under APDO's project has wet borehole drilled for them which installation in in progress. God bless you all for your great efforts towards humanity
Regards from all APDO staff!!!!!!! Rockson Dutenya

...And one from Modoc, the inspoirational man who runs APDO, the local NGO running the projects:
Hi My Sister,
I am with great joy to announce to you that the women of Najore with your contribution would not have to walk 4km for only 35litres of disease infected water but now they need to walk thirty metres away from the community for a very clean water.
I and the country Rep of Water Aid witness the event with much joy where women of Najore could not hide their happiness and joy for what has happen to their commnity. I send you pictures of the drilling process.
Keep fit!
