The plans to remove Indigenous language from bilingual schools in the Northern Territory have been met with fierce opposition and claims of ill-advised and inappropriate policy from Australia's Race Discrimination Commission Tom Calma.
Despite research showing that teaching with a focus on traditional language improves eduaction rates, the NT Government has announced its plans to go ahead with compulsory teaching in English for half the school day from next year. There are worries about the lack of consultation on this matter in line with those measure used to implement the NT Intervention last year.

The Independent Senator, Nick Xenophon has outlined that he will block Federal Government's plan to reinstate the permit system for Northern Territory Aboriginal communities, forcing the Rudd Government to postpone debate on the bill in Senate.
Despite overwhelming support for the permit system from Aboriginal communities and little evidence to show that its removal has improved the situation in Aboriginal communities, the Senator has stated his lack of support but that he 'may be persuaded to change his mind'.
