MIKE COOPER returns for another of his annual Australian tours. For the past 40 years British guitarist Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer tracing a path completely his own performing and recording solo and in a number of inspired groupings. His roots lie in acoustic country blues as one of the handful of pioneering players of the Sixties Acoustic British Blues Boom playing with and alongside blues legends such as Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bukka White and others.
Cooper has arguably stretched the possibilities of the guitar even more than his better known contemporaries Davy Graham Bert Jansch John Renbourne etc. by pursuing it into the more avant-garde areas also occupied by contemporary guitar innovators such as Elliott Sharp, Keith Rowe, Fred Frith and Marc Ribot. His eclectic mix of styles range freely through traditional country blues, folk, original songs, free improvisation, pop songs, electronic music and ‘sonic gestural’ playing combined with the sounds of Pacific slack key open tunings and lap steel guitar. He is also a film and video maker / graphic artist /music journalist and collector of Hawaiian shirts.
