Montestigliano

Montestigliano is a 2500-acre estate composed of a group of carefully restored 18th century houses and farm buildings. No two of the eleven guest apartments are alike; each has its own special charm and character, along with fully equipped kitchens and modern bathrooms. One has been specifically adapted to accommodate guests with disabilities. There are two pools, cooking lessons, trails and most houses have fireplaces or woodstoves.

The agricultural estate of Montestigliano has been owned by the Donati family for over fifty years. Centrally located in the heart of Tuscany, perched high on a hill, commanding magnificent views of the Sienese landscape, Montestigliano is not only the perfect retreat but an ideal location to discover and explore the beauty of Tuscany. The immediate surroundings of the 2500 acre estate, itself a working farm, provide a glorious setting for walking, hiking or mountain biking through woodland and meadows, a game of bocce under the shade of oak trees, swimming in the Merse River, painting, or simply relaxing in your private garden or beside the pool.

Montestigliano is composed of a group of 18th century houses and farm buildings which have been carefully restored to retain the original features common to Tuscan architecture, such as exposed beam ceilings, whitewashed walls and terra-cotta tiled floors. No two of the eleven apartments are alike; each has its own charm and character. They have been tastefully furnished and decorated and have fully equipped kitchens, bed and bath linens, washing machine, iron, telephone and barbecue. One has been specifically adapted to accommodate guests with disabilities. All have central heat.

The on-site guest manager at Montestigliano is Susan Pennington, who is more than willing to help you make the most of your stay. She can provide directions, assistance with reservations, ideas for day trips, information about local festivals and other special events and suggestions of great places to eat.

A perfect setting for weddings, birthday parties and family reunions.
The proximity of the houses of Montestigliano create a beautiful scenic village setting, which is a lovely way to gather friends and family in Tuscany for a special occasion. The large dining room of "il Granione" the former granary, can accommodate about 50 guests. Susan Pennington can assist as wedding planner or party coordinator. She will work with you to arrange a minister for a ceremony, menu planning, flowers and all details.

Cooking lessons are generally offered weekly on site. Nearby are facilities for tennis and horseback riding; ceramics lessons, bicycle rental and wine tastings can be easily arranged. Siena, where twice a year the Palio (a medieval horse race) takes place, is less than 10 miles away. Florence is 40 miles to the north and Grosseto and the Maremma coast about 30 miles south. The famous historic towns of San Gimignano, Pienza, Arezzo, Assisi, Montalcino, Cortona and Volterra are all within easy reach by car. Just a few miles away, the villages of Rosia and San Rocco a Pilli offer bakery, bank, post office, supermarket, gas station, pharmacy, newsagent, laundry, etc.

A continental breakfast is offered weekdays during mid and high seasons in il Granaione, Dinners are also offered a couple of times a week. Local products and produce, including olive oil from the estate, are available for purchase.

Winter in Tuscany
Many think of the lazy days of summer but Tuscany in winter is Tuscany at its most intimate. Few tourists, it is the time when the locals take possession of their country again. During the winter months you can join them, and get the feeling of belonging to this magical region where culture and traditions are still very much alive, with many local festivals; celebrating Porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, truffles and newly pressed olive oil. You can come back to your Tuscan home and relax beside an open fire with a glass of wine and savour the gastronomic delicacies of the season.

November in particular is a month full of activity, the middle two weekends host the famous truffle festival in the Crete Senese. It also coincides with the olive harvest, which you might like to participate in and take a trip to the olive mill. Then, for those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, you may consider Montestigliano as an alternative location. We will take the stress and strain, leaving you to enjoy a magnificent feast with your friends and family with turkey roasted in our wood-burning oven!
Please ask for our special winter activities.
